Memorial Day Remembrance

(5-28-11) - Please take a moment on Memorial Day to give thanks and recognize the sacrifices

our fallen soldiers and their families have made to ensure that we are able to live

in a society where citizens are free to pursue life, liberty and happiness. We have so

much to be thankful for in the United States as well as the great state of Texas.

Have a safe and happy holiday.

Thank you.

UTMB Employee Wellness Week April 11th through 15th

(5-23-11) - As part of the UTMB Employee Wellness Program, a 1 mile walk had to be completed on Wednesday, April 13th and participants received a complimentary T-shirt. Ms. Angie Buro, Practice Manager and Mr. Chris Brown, Nurse Manager were very supportive in letting us accomplish our goal.  I organized the walk and rallied up Lane Murray employees to take part in our walk and thus became the unit’s Wellness Champion. Along with the walk, information was handed out to provide employees with ideas to promote health and fitness that were featured on the UTMB Employee website.

Not very many units were aware of the program but I am hoping to be able to advertise more upcoming events in our area as I am staying the unit’s “wellness champion” and will continue to receive information of events in the future from UTMB HR. I will be able to pick up Hilltop and Mountain View in the next events but it would be great if we could include more CMC facilities in the future. It was really a great day and little things like that help build teamwork and comradery. Photos below.

Briscoe and Cotulla Employees Celebrate 15 years plus with UTMB, TDCJ

(5-17-11) -The Briscoe and Cotulla Dental, Hygiene and X-Ray departments celebrated their 15 year Pin ceremony at the Briscoe and Cotulla Complex. All four employees have been employed for 15 years with UTMB, and 20 plus years total starting when the Briscoe Facility first opened.

Employees are from left to right: Gracie Silva, Registered Dental Assistant, Carol Smoot, Dental Hygienist, Keith Dossett, Radiology Technician, and Gladys Salcedo, Registered Dental Assistant. Dental Director Scott Reinecke, who was Supervisor and Director of both the Briscoe and Cotulla complex, has been serving as the District and Region Dental Director after his more than years as Dentist for the Complex.

Patients from the Cotulla Complex are bussed weekly to receive Radiology, Dental and Hygiene services from the Briscoe staff. When asked why Mrs. Smoot has stayed employed here so many years, she states "The job as Dental hygienist has been less stressful than in a regular Dental clinic. I have enjoyed working with the offender population, and working with positive co-workers has really made a difference as well". Keith Dossett says "This is the best job I have ever had!" Mr. Dossett and Ms. Smoot travel to several units to conduct x-rays and perform cleanings.

Gladys Salcedo says that "Working with caring co-workers and good security relationships makes for good friendships and making access to care more efficient." Gracie agrees that "teamwork between all staff members is a must to be successful and keeping job satisfaction. I have enjoyed working with the population and staff of the Briscoe and Cotulla units." All four UTMB employees say they have enjoyed working there and that it is their co-workers who make the difference.

Respectfully submitted by Denise Sauceda, Practice Manager
